Summary of optimal water values:
• Nitrate (NO 3) <0.50 mg / l
Nitrate (chemical formula NO3) is the end product of the degradation of ammonia by nitrifying bacteria in your aquarium or pond. Nitrate is not toxic to fish, so it does not affect fish health like ammonia or nitrite.
However, high concentrations can cause growth retardation and reduce fish reproduction.
Indirectly, nitrate can lead to algae problems, as nitrate is one of the key nutrients for algae and plants.
Nitrate is not toxic, but it is desirable to keep its value in the water to a minimum to prevent the growth of filamentous algae.
Recommended values for ponds and aquariums are - 50 mg / l and for saltwater 10 mg / l.
